Liberia is sweet.
Before making my trip to Liberia, I ‘ve always heard people saying, “Liberia is Sweet” whenever they return from a mini vacation. So, I said to myself, one day I’ll experience this sweetness first hand.
What I noticed with the limited time I spent there, Liberia is a country that is still undergoing crisis from every perspective, a country with about 70 percent of its people living in penury and children engaging in impractical things to make ends meet.
“Liberia is sweet”, stems from three things. Corruption, Sex and Fun. Sadly, there’s nothing else significantly that can be referenced to the phrase. It was so disheartening to see all these teenagers or better still young girls with men all covered in gray beard as old as their dad’s sitting at entertainment spots with no remorse on how society sees them.
I drove through communities that parents couldn’t afford a single meal for their children, healthcare is a total mess, as for the road condition, lets table that for another regime. The entire country is at a standstill, few people are able live a pleasant life, the rest of the people are languishing.
As for government agencies, it’s the biggest joke there is. People come to work at 8 AM, walk around for 2 hours before the start functioning, take lunch around 12 Noon and return after 3 hours, close at 5 PM and still expect to get paid.
Pro Poor Appointees
I sat at a restaurant one day observing one of the newly appointed Minister having lunch with about 5 of his office staff for almost 4 hours. Drinking beer and lecturing on government’s time. Sadly, the very gentleman lived in the US for decades and I know he’s aware you don’t dissipate any agency’s time in that manner where he came from.
People should stop this rubbish of selling everything is okay in Liberia when they go for a few weeks, the only reason they have fun is because they carry money with them, try and go to Liberia for a few months with no means of income and experience the life of the common people and comeback with the Liberia is Sweet Song, then I’ll give credence to that.
Liberia is it stands needs a great deal of work to help the country move forward, but from the on-look of things, we’re not getting anywhere anytime soon.
